Following an impressive start to life in 2023, Marcel Fengler’s masterfully curated HARDPROOF series stomps forward into the new year with another hard-hitting edition. Coming in hot with an expected amount of minimal techno potency, the fourth instalment of IMF’s HARDPROOF VA series welcomes Sons Of Hidden, Rey Brennan, JANEIN, Mathys Lenne and Jay York with five creatively crafted original tracks. The VA gets underway with Sons Of Hidden and ‘Forgotten Garden’, diving straight into a pulsating flurry of fat, rounded kicks and hissing hat grooves alongside its relentlessly pumping low-end drive whilst glitchy vox shots, sensual vocal accents and sinister samples give it an eerily tribal/primal feel before Ray Brennan’s ‘Defender’ brings more savage low-frequency power from the outset. Riding a reeling vocal sample from the off, its progressive peaks and troughs, filled with corrosive melodic components, keep things on full intensity for the duration. JANEIN comes next with ‘Perseids’ taking things on a hypnotic trip in this tribal-tinged kaleidoscope of dystopian synths and mind-bending modulation before Mathys Lenne’s ‘Lise’ delivers more stripped- back ominous vibes alongside harshened industrial grooves and a rolling bassline. The release ends with Jay York and ‘Halsey’, which features a distinct alien feel from the outset and offers another solid exhibition of narcotic musicality set to the score of stadium-sized beats and a mix packed with fattened frequencies from start to finish.
