The question is simple: what, precisely, is the “before”? Is it a beginning, a precursor, a shrug of inevitability? Or is it just a cheeky way for time to tell us it has no clue either? 

When “before” feels like it is about to deliver a profound statement. It never does, of course, but the anticipation is half the fun. Midway through though the realisation hits that you already left the before and are now undeniably heading towards the after. Each moment making you second-guess what you just thought. Might this actually be the middle? Or just another before?

"Before the After" doesn’t solve the riddle it poses—it revels in it.
