Common Factors

Alexander Church continues to establish Life Scripts, the Configurations Of Self off-shoot focussed on storytelling music drawn from the worlds of electronica, breakbeat and ambient. As with the first two releases, he is behind the music with his Common Factors alias, a project with long time collaborative partner James Welsh. Common Factors launched this label with two brilliant early EPs that turned plenty of heads including Tom Ravenscroft on BBC6 Music. As always the music is carefully thought out and conceptual, drawing on the stories we all create about ourselves, and the histories which define us. As well as Bradford-based DJ, producer and Configurations of Self boss Alexander Church, James Welsh is involved with the project having proven himself to be a multi-faceted artist and former post punk band member who releases via leading labels including Futureboogie and Phantasy Sound. The majestic Principle of Opposites' opens up with brain cleansing and heavenly ambient synths and twinkling keys before a warm, booming breakbeat arrives to carry you through the stars on a wave of subtle positivity. 'Testable Concepts' is another intelligent track with lush, glowing harmonics and this time more rubbery, rooted drums that get you locked in. The gorgeous 'False Hope Syndrome' showcases exquisite breakbeat designs with more celestial synth work that comes on like a mid-rave rush, and 'Parapraxe' then explores darker territory, with nagging leads making for an unsettling vibe over the rugged drum work. Things get more cosmic and abstract on the complex 'Process Models' with its deeply buried drums and scintillating percussion, before closer 'Regression' is an all out old school rave up with yelping vocal stabs, supersized breaks and warp speed synths. This is another hugely deft and accomplished EP that takes old school electronic nostalgia well into the future.
